Out of a population of 1,20,50,73,612 (July 2012 est.), only 61% can read and write ie. 73,50,94,903 people. Still 46,99,78,709 are illiterate.
Out of 1.2 billion, 47 million cannot read and write.
The United States of America and United Kingdom have 99% literacy rate.
India is the 5th country with the highest GDP annually, $ 4,421,000,000,000. Even with this enormous wealth, only 3.10% of the GDP is spent on education. India is ranked 129th on the list of money spent on education every year.
India currently has the largest illiterate population of any nation on earth. Despite government programs, India's literacy rate increased only "sluggishly," and a 1990 study estimated that it would take until 2060 for India to achieve universal literacy at then-current rate of progress.
